Ravenna: Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is the civic and commercial centre of the town.

It is a rectangular area with one short end facing east and one short end facing west.

The Town Hall (municipio) is located at the western end of the square.
The two columns in front of the Town Hall were erected by the Venetians in 1483.

The circular pedestals of the columns are shaped like steps.

The elegant decorations on the vertical tiles are carved by P. Lombardi.

The column on the left is surmounted with a statue of St. Apollinare,
the first Bishop of Ravenna.

The column on the right was originally surmounted with the Lion of St. Mark.
In 1509 the Lion was replaced by a statue of St. Vitale.

Venice ruled Ravenna from 1441 to 1509.
Ravenna has been a part of Italy since the state was proclaimed in 1861.
