Ravenna: Piazza Garibaldi

Every city and town in Italy has a street or a square which is named after Garibaldi.
Ravenna is no exception.

Garibaldi is regarded as a national hero in Italy,
because he helped create the modern state Italy.

Giuseppe Garibaldi was born in 1807. For many years
he struggled to create a unified Italy, which was proclaimed in 1861.
The monument in Ravenna was erected in 1892, ten years after his death in 1882.

Garibaldi was the military commander, who conquered most of Italy and handed it
over to Vittorio Emanuele II of Piemonte, who became the first king of Italy,
keeping the number II after his name!

The four sides of the pedestal are decorated with reliefs,
which show Garibaldi in different situations and roles.
On this side he is carrying a women ashore from a boat.

On this side he is in a battle scene.

On this side a wounded soldier is resting on the ground (the right section).
Garibaldi is shown standing among the people in the left section.

On this side he is in another battle scene.
