Catherine Cookson (1906-1998) was a British author who wrote almost one hundred books. Some people called them romances, but according to the author, they were historical novels, because the (fictional) story-line was always placed in a historical context.

Many of her books were best-sellers in several countries. She has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. Many of her books have been adapted for television.

The book on which this movie is based – Colour Blind - was first published in 1953. It is one of the first books she wrote, and one of the last books to be adapted for television.

The story takes place in South Shields, which is located on the south side of the Tyne River, near the mouth of the river, not far from Newcastle, which is located on the north side of the Tyne River, a few miles to the west of South Shields.

Catherine Cookson was born in South Shields in 1906. That is why many of her stories are set in the north of England.

This story covers two decades: 1915-1935

I do not wish to spoil the viewing for anyone. This is why I am not going to say too much about what happens in this movie. I will only tell you how the story begins.

Colour Blind is the story of Bridget, James, and their daughter Rose-Angela.

When Bridget returns from a stay in Liverpool, she shocks her family by telling them (in a letter) that she is married now. But there is one small detail she “forgets” to tell them.

And they do not find out what it is until the moment when the couple is standing outside the front door of the family house in South Shields:

Bridget’s husband is a black man from Africa!

He is a sailor in the navy.

This is not going to be easy.

After being accused of murder, James must leave town as fast as he can. When their daughter Rose-Angela grows up, she must learn to cope with the high level of racism that is surrounding her.

This is how the story begins, and this is where my presentation ends. If you want to know what happens to Bridget, James, Rose-Angela and the people around them, you will have to watch the drama (or read the book) all the way to the end.

What do reviewers say about this movie?

On IMDb it has a rating of 73 per cent, which corresponds to 3.7 stars on Amazon.

On Amazon UK there are at the moment more than 100 ratings of the DVD, more than 50 with reviews.

The average rating is 4.6 stars which corresponds to a rating of 92 percent.

If you ask me, this rating on IMDb is too low, while the rating on Amazon UK is much more appropriate.

I want to go all the way to the top with this product. I think it deserves a rating of five stars (100 percent).

PS # 1. The actress Niamh Cusack is best known for her role as Dr. Kate Rowan on the British television series Heartbeat (1992-1995).

PS # 2. The actress Carmen Ejogo is known for her role as Sally Hemings in the historical drama Sally Hemings (2000) and for her role as Rebecca in television series Zero Hour (2011). She plays Coretta Scott King in the historical drama Selma (2014).
