In January 1921, the Swedish parliament finalised a law which gave adult women the right to vote and to run for public office. The first election under the new law took place in September 1921.
From 1866 until 1970, the Swedish parliament had two chambers: the upper chamber and the lower chamber.
In 1921, the upper chamber had 150 seats, while the lower chamber had 230 seats. The total number of seats = 380.
Only one of the five women served in the upper chamber: Kerstin Hesselgren. The other four women served in the lower chamber.
This film is divided into two chapters.
The first chapter explains who the five women are; how and why they became involved in politics; how and why they decided to run for public office when the new law allowed them to do so.
The second chapter covers their experience once they were in parliament. Five women in a parliament which had 375 male members!
What were they able to do?
What were they unable to do?
Did they make any difference at all?
Or were they too few to achieve any real results?

The story of the five pioneers - the first women who won a seat in the Swedish parliament – is important. This story deserves to be told, and in this film, it is done very well.
I want to go all the way to the top with this product. I think it deserves a rating of five stars (100 percent).
If you are interested in the modern history of Sweden – in particular the women’s struggle for equality – this film is definitely something for you. It is highly recommended.
