God Save Texas is a documentary film (divided into three parts) which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024. It premiered on US television (HBO) in February 2024.
This film is inspired by the book God Save Texas: A Journey into the Soul of the Lone Star State by Lawrence (“Larry”) Wright (which was published in 2018).
The series explores the past, the present, and the future of Texas.
There are three episodes and three directors:
Episode # 1
** Hometown Prison
** Director = Richard Linklater
** Run time = 87 minutes
Episode # 2
** The Price of Oil
** Director = Alex Stapleton
** Run time = 55 minutes
Episode 3
** La Frontera
** Director = Iliana Sosa
** Run time = 54 minutes
Lawrence Wright is involved in the series which is based on his book.
He is an executive producer of the series.
He appears briefly - usually in the beginning of each episode - when he is talking with the director of the episode.
What do reviewers say about this film?
Here are some results:
75 percent = The Roger Ebert website
90 percent = Movie Web
100 percent = Rotten Tomatoes (the critics)
On IMDb, each episode is rated separately:
86 percent = episode 1
80 percent = episode 2
71 percent = episode 3
The average rating is 79 percent
As you can see, the ratings are quite good. In my opinion, the good ratings are fully justified. This film is very interesting. This film is worth watching.
Obviously, it does not cover everything about Texas in the past, in the present, and in the future.
The purpose of this film is not to create an encyclopedia which has a few words about every topic and every person who has a connection with Texas.
The purpose is to explore three topics which are important and significant for Texas. The three topics and the three directors are well-chosen. The people who are interviewed are also well-chosen.
The three episodes have a laid-back and casual feeling, but in spite of this fact the topic is explored in great detail. Serious problems are given a serious consideration.
You do not have to agree with the director or with the people who are interviewed in order to appreciate this film.
The topics explored in this film are important and significant for Texas and thus for the USA.
These topics deserve to be explored, and in this film, it is done very well.
I want to go all the way to the top with this product. I think it deserves a rating of five stars (100 percent).
