Ravenna: Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe (1)

Basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe is located ca. 5 km south of Ravenna. This picture shows the bell tower (campanile) of the church and a modern copy of a statue of the Roman Emperor Augustus, which is placed in front of the church.

Augustus, who ruled the Roman Empire from 27 BC to AD 14, decided to place a large part of the Roman fleet at Ravenna. For this purpose Ravenna's harbour was expanded, and the city became more important than it was before. The Latin word CLASSIS means fleet. In Italian it becomes classe.

The park in front of the church is named after Pope John Paul II (1978-2005).
In Italy he is known as Papa Giovanni Paolo II.
The pope was born in Poland in 1920.
He died in Rome in 2005.

This plan shows the layout of the church: three naves preceded by a narthex (an entrance hall).
The church was consecrated in 549. The bell tower (campanile) was added in the 10th century.

Getting there:
Take bus # 4 (heading south) from the railway station in town.
The journey takes about 15 minutes.
A one way ticket is 1.20 Euro. A return ticket is 2.40 Euro
You can buy your ticket inside the railway station (the counter on the left side)

Getting back:
When the bus is heading north, it leaves the main road (via Romea Sud) and turns right just before the church and makes a loop into the village of Classe. It returns to the main road just after the church. The bus stop is on the small road next to the coffee shop, opposite the church.
