Thomas Mann - a Brief Biography

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The famous German writer Thomas Mann was born in Germany in 1875. More precisely in Lübeck which is located in the northern part of Germany.

 

His father died in 1891. The family business was sold and in 1894 the rest of the family moved to Munich in the southern part of Germany.

 

Thomas Mann lived in that city for many years. In 1905 he married Katia Pringsheim. The couple had six children: three sons and three daughters.

 

In January 1933, when Hitler and the Nazi party came to power, Thomas and his wife Katia were abroad. They did not return to Germany.

 

In 1933, the six children were still in Germany. But they managed to leave the country during the year 1933.

 

Thomas and his wife Katia decided to live in exile. At first, in Switzerland and in France. In 1939, they moved to the US. During World War Two they lived in California.

 

In 1952, they returned to Europe. 

 

They visited Frankfurt am Main in West Germany as well as Weimar in East Germany, but Thomas did not want to live in Germany.

 

He lived in Switzerland until the end of his life.

He died in Zürich (Switzerland) in 1955.

His wife Katia was now a widow.

She remained in Switzerland.

She died in 1980.
