In 1911, she had a problem with her health. It was assumed she had tuberculosis. In 1912, she was sent to a sanatorium in Davos in Switzerland.
She was there for six months: from March to September 1912. Thomas Mann visited her while she was there. He stayed with her for three weeks: from June to July 1912.
The sanatorium and the surrounding area made a huge impression on him.
The visit to the sanatorium in Davos inspired him to compose one of his most famous works, The Magic Mountain, which was published in 1924.
After a while, the doctors discovered that Katia did not have tuberculosis. Her health improved. And she lived longer than her husband.
Thomas Mann was born in 1875.
He died in 1955.
Katia Mann was born in 1883.
She died in 1980.
