The famous German writer Thomas Mann was born in Lübeck in 1875. In 1894, he moved with his family to Munich where he lived until 1933.

On 11 February 1905, he married Katia whose family name was Pringsheim. Over the following years, the couple had six children: three sons and three daughters.

His first child - a daughter - was born on 09 November 1905. She was named Erika.

In a letter written on 11 November 1905, Thomas tells his brother Heinrich that he and Katia now have a daughter.

Here is what he writes:

“Well, it's a girl; a disappointment to me, I must admit, as I had so wished for a boy and still do.

“Why? It's hard to say. I find a son has more poetry; a son is more a continuation and new beginning of myself under new circumstances.”
