King Taksin was grateful to the Portuguese
who had fought for Ayutthaya in the military campaign
against Burma of 1767.

He wanted to reward them. He gave them a plot of land
where they could settle and build a church
near his own palace in Thonburi,
the new capital of Thailand.

This plot of land is by the river,
close to the western river bank.
The first church was completed in 1770.
It was built of wood.

When the settlement burned down in 1833,
a second church was built on the same site.
This time, it was built of stone.

The present building dates from 1916,
when a substantial renovation took place.
Minor renovations were made in 1996.
