Eine Liebe für den Frieden (2014)

Eine Liebe für den Frieden – an Austrian-German co-production - is a historical and biographical drama which premiered on Austrian television in December 2014 and on German television in January 2015.

This drama focuses on the lives of Bertha von Suttner and Alfred Nobel.

Here is some basic information about it:

** Director: Urs Egger

** Writers: Rainer Berg & Thomas Wendrich

** Based on the play Mr. & Mrs. Nobel by Esther Vilar

** Soundtrack: German – no English subtitles!

** Released on DVD in 2015

** Run time: 88 minutes

The cast includes the following:

The first group

** Birgit Minichmayr as Bertha von Suttner (1843-1914) – an author and a peace activist (born in Prague)

** Sebastian Koch as Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) – a Swedish-born businessman, founder of the Nobel Foundation

** Philipp Hochmair as Arthur von Suttner (1850-1902) – Bertha’s husband

The second group

** Yohanna Schwertfeger as Sofie Hess – Alfred Nobel’s lover for fifteen years (1876-1891)

** Johannes Herrschmann as Auguste – Alfred Nobel’s butler

** André Jung as Fréderic Passy (1822-1912) – a French economist and a peace activist

In this drama, we follow the life and career of Bertha von Suttner. We learn how she became an author and a peace activist.

We also follow the life and career of Alfred Nobel. We learn how he decided to set up the Nobel Foundation which offers five annual prizes:

Four awards for scientific and literary works, which are handed out in Stockholm, and one award for promoting peace in the world, which is handed out in Oslo.

Bertha and Alfred met in Paris in 1876 when he hired her as his private secretary. She did not stay long. She left after two weeks to marry the love of her life, Arthur von Suttner.

But the short time in Paris made a huge impression on both of them. They kept in touch by correspondence until Alfred passed away in 1896.

It is believed that Bertha and her work as a peace activist inspired Alfred to establish the Nobel Peace Prize.

What do reviewers say about this historical and biographical drama?

Here are some results:

On IMDb it has a rating of 67 percent.

On Amazon Germany there are at the moment 26 ratings of this product; seven with reviews.

The average rating is 4.7 stars which corresponds to a rating of 94 percent.

If you ask me, the rating on IMDb is too low, while the rating on Amazon is more appropriate.

Why?

I have four reasons:

# 1. The script is well-written

# 2. The actors play their roles well

# 3. The story is captivating, dramatic and often highly emotional

# 4. The drama is based on a true story

I want to go all the way to the top with this product. I think it deserves a rating of five stars (100 percent).

PS # 1. The following item is available online: Irwin Abrams, “Alfred Nobel, Bertha von Suttner and the Nobel peace prize.”

PS # 2. Urs Egger - the director of the drama - was born in Switzerland in 1953.

PS # 3. Esther Vilar – the author of the play on which the drama is based - was born in Argentina in 1935. In 1960, she moved to West Germany.

She is best known for her 1971 book The Manipulated Man. She is still alive in 2023.

PS # 4. In 1905 Bertha von Suttner was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She was the second woman to win a Nobel Prize (the first was Marie Curie).

PS # 5. Regarding Alfred Nobel and Sofie Hess, see the following item:
