Mystery Road is a crime series which premiered on Australian television (ABC) in 2018.
It is a spin-off from the movie Mystery Road (2013) and the movie Goldstone (2016).
Here is some basic information about this series:
Season 1 - 2018
** Director: Rachel Perkins
** Writers: Kodie Bedford, Steven McGregor, Michaeley O’Brien, and Tim Lee
** The cast includes the following: Aaron Pedersen, Judy Davis, Deborah Mailman, Colin Friels, and Wayne Blair
** Season 1 = 6 episodes
Season 2 - 2020
** Directors: Warwick Thornton Wayne Blair
** Writers: Steven McGregor, Blake Ayshford, Kodie Bedford, Tim Lee, and Danielle MacLean
** The cast includes the following: Aaron Pedersen, Jada Alberts, Callan Mulvey, Rob Collins, and Gary Sweet
** Season 2 = 6 episodes
Season 3 - 2022
** Director: Dylan River
** Writers: Steven McGregor, Kodie Bedford, Tim Lee, and Blake Ayshford
** The cast includes the following: Mark Coles Smith, Toby Leonard Moore, Daniel Henshall, Lisa Flanagan, and Clarence Ryan
** Season 3 = 6 episodes
Season 3 is a prequel, set in 1999, with the title Mystery Road: Origin. Mark Coles Smith plays a young version of detective Jay Swan.
This series is unusual for two reasons:
(1) It is set in the Australian outback. We are far from the big city.
(2) The leading actor is an Aboriginal: Aaron Pedersen in seasons one and two; Mark Coles Smith in season three.
I do not wish to spoil the viewing for anyone. I am not going to say much about what happens in this series. I will only offer a few hints:
** It is very Australian
** It is very laid back
Some viewers say it is a slow burn. I think this is a good description.
What do reviewers say about it?
Here are some results:
** 75 percent = IMDb
** 90 percent = Amazon Prime
** 100 per cent = Rotten Tomatoes
If you ask me, the rating on IMDb is too low, while the ratings on Amazon and Rotten Tomatoes are more appropriate. Why? Let me explain:
The beginning is good. I like the setting, and I like a drama where the story is slowly building up. In addition, the cinematography is excellent. There are some fabulous views of the landscape in the Australian outback.
Since the beginning is good, I have high expectations and fortunately they are fulfilled:
# 1. The script is well-written
# 2. The actors play their roles well
# 3. The story is captivating, dramatic, and often highly emotional
# 4. While fictional, the story is set in a contemporary context which is (almost) realistic
I want to go all the way to the top with this product. I think it deserves a rating of five stars (100 percent).
PS # 1. Mystery Road is an Australian drama which premiered in 2013.
My rating: 2 stars.
PS # 2. Goldstone - an Australian drama which premiered in 2016 - is a sequel to Mystery Road.
My rating: 3 stars.
PS # 3. In season one from 2018, Emma and Tony are sister and brother. In the real world, Judy Davis and Colin Friels are husband and wife!
PS # 4. The television series Water Rats ran for six seasons on Australian television (1996-2001).
Colin Friels and Aaron Pedersen were both members of the cast, but not at the same time:
Colin Friels played Frank Holloway 1996-1999, while Aaron Pedersen played Michael Reilly 1999-2001.
PS # 5. Aaron Pedersen has a minor role on the Australian television series A Place to Call Home, which ran for six seasons (2013-2018).
PS # 6. This review is based on season one (2018), season two (2020), and season three (2022).
